Chemical Peels for Acne Treatment

By Marlene Ataine

Although for some it is mild with only a few pimples or "zits" occurring every so often, almost every teenager has suffered acne at some point. For other teenagers however, acne can be more severe, and give rise to spots called whiteheads, blackheads, or larger red, inflamed spots called cysts in more severe cases. These skin pimples, spots and cysts can change the tone of the skin, leaving a darker tone and severe acne can in some cases leave scarring.

Although acne does not pose any danger, it can result in scarring of the skin. The pores (tiny holes) in human skin are connected to oil glands underneath it. The glands are connected to the pores via follicles - small canals. These glands produce Sebum, an oily liquid. Dead skin cells are carried by the sebum through the follicles to the surface of the skin. From the follicle, out of the skin, a small hair grows. When these follicles get blocked, oil accumulates under the skin and pimples develop. Acne is common in teenagers as the hormonal changes during puberty can cause excess oils in the skin. Later in life, adults can suffer from acne too, not just during the teenage years.

Sometimes adult acne is caused by overproduction of or hypersensitivity to the male hormones called androgens. When both male and female hormones (estrogen) are imbalanced, it also results in a breakout. This can happen during a woman's pregnancy, perimenopause, or menopause. Occasionally, some cosmetics or medications like corticosteroids can also cause acne to develop.

Chemical peels are a very good treatment for mild and moderate adult acne. Chemical peels work by exfoliating the skin; dirt is cleansed from the skin, and dead skin cells which are clogging the pores are removed. This causes fewer acne pimples and spots to form. Chemical peels may also help to reduce some of the skin discolouration and uneven skin tone caused by acne.

Chemical peels are a very cost effective option for acne treatment. This acne treatment is also very safe. The top layers of the skin are exfoliated and cleansed by superficial chemical skin peels that remove all the dead skin cells. We usually recommend a regime of six peels, with at least one week between each treatment. This will result in a noticeable improvement in the skin texture and visibly reduce the amount of acne breakouts.

Only a credible skin care clinic should be approached for your acne treatment chemical peel. Before embarking on treatment with chemical peels for acne, it is important to consult a reputable clinic to obtain advice on how the chemical peel treatment will benefit your skin type.
